Welcome to Stony Brook!
The university faculty you now join sustains an institution that has provided more than six decades of service to the community in which it subsists. Founded in 1957 in Oyster Bay, New York, originally tasked to train secondary school math and science teachers, Stony Brook University has emerged today as a national and world leader in scholarship, research, and art-making. We are celebrated for being innovative, trend-setting, and student-centered. Our colleges and schools offer an impressively wide array of degrees in arts and sciences, business, engineering and applied sciences, health sciences (including dental medicine, health technology and management, medicine, nursing, social welfare, and pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences), journalism, marine and atmospheric sciences, and professional development. In addition the university has demonstrated a profound commitment to creating a superior learning environment by fostering outstanding accomplishments among its faculty. Stony Brook professors have been awarded the most prestigious honors in the academic world along with being elected to membership in the National Academies and in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among the exemplary distinctions bestowed to date upon our Stony Brook colleagues are 7 Nobel Prizes, 2 Fields Medals, 2 Pulitzer Prizes, 3 MacArthur Foundation Prizes, 7 National Medals of Science, and 3 National Medals of Technology and Innovation.
Stony Brook resolutely connects its values and mission to the needs of Long Island, the state of New York, the nation, and the world. As a consequence, the profile and impact of all the endeavors in which our faculty and students engage are substantively transformed. At the same time, our students gain practical experience, putting their rapidly maturing skills to use. We are very proud that our students thus have a truly unique educational experience. And we know that our outstanding teaching and mentorship, and the striking diversity in the degree programs we offer, help attract to Stony Brook the very best faculty and students from across our state and nation and from around the globe. In the final analysis, it is the faculty and staff who make Stony Brook the truly extraordinary place that it is. It is their excellence and skill that inspire our students and that will always enlighten, strengthen, and improve the wider communities we serve. With enormous enthusiasm, I welcome you to our faculty and I wish you every success in all your endeavors.
With my warmest regards,
Michael A. Bernstein,
