Financial support for travel to chamber music competitions

The Department of Music is offering a limited amount of financial support for chamber music groups invited to attend national and international competitions such as Fischoff, Coleman, M Prize, etc. If your group has passed the pre-screening round of such a chamber music-oriented competition, please submit your group's personnel (the entire group must be Stony Brook students), identify a primary point person, and forward your official invitation letter. We also ask that you estimate your projected total expenses as accurately and clearly as possible. These may include items such as application fees, lodging, and airfare. Please submit your materials by April 15 directly to Nicholas Cords ( Decisions will be made by April 22 by the chamber music co-directors Nicholas Cords and Alan Kay in collaboration with department chair Perry Goldstein. Funds awarded will be applied towards reimbursement only, so don't delay booking your travel and please keep your receipts. Please also note that the final award amount may only represent a percentage of your group's expenses.

As you may know, two of the top three inaugural M-Prizes last year were awarded to groups with Stony Brook affiliations. The Calidore String Quartet, in residence at Stony Brook at the time, won the prize for strings as well as the top prize, and Yarn/Wire, the two-piano/two percussion quartet of alums from our DMA program, won top prize in the "Open Ensemble" category. Our hope is that this assistance enables ensembles this year and in the future to attend these events.  We would love to see as much representation from Stony Brook as possible at these prestigious competitions - there is truly a lot of first rate chamber music happening here and it should be recognized widely.

*Please note: if we have a large number of groups attending, additional screening may be required.
