Michael Man-Wai Cheng, Voice

Hong Kong-born baritone Michael Man-Wai Cheng has been in much demand as both a soloist and a chorister in many local and overseas performances.

In the 2019-2020 season, Michael will debut the role of Marquis de La Force in Poulenc's Dialogue des Carmélites, with Stony Brook Opera. He has performed in Opera Scenes as Papageno in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte. He has also performed with the University Orchestra as a soloist and a guest conductor for Handel’s Messiah. In May 2019, he premiered The Seven Deadly Sins, a song cycle for soprano, baritone, and piano, by Hong Kong composer Ng Yu Sze Melody.

As a concert singer, Michael appeared as a bass soloist in Coronation Mass in C major by Mozart, Suite Nordestina by R. Miranda, Chansons françaises by Poulenc, Rejoice in the Lord Alway by Purcell and Magnificat by Vivaldi. Serving as the associate conductor of Hong Kong Baptist University Christian Choir from 2014 to 2018, he performed with the choir in Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. In 2016, he joined the UK performance tour with Cantoría Hong Kong at King’s College Chapel of Cambridge, the Royal Holloway University of London and BBC Broadcasting House.

Michael obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Music with first-class honors from Hong Kong Baptist University. He was selected as an outstanding student of the Arts Faculty and has received numerous scholarships. His major voice teachers included Jimmy Chan and Siu-Kwan Chan. He is currently pursuing his Master of Music in Voice Performance at Stony Brook University under the tutelage of Christòpheren Nomura, and he has coached intensively with Daniel Beckwith.

Michael is now serving as the bass section leader in Saint Peter's Church Choir in New York City.
