The University Orchestra with 70 to 75 undergraduate students presents a series of concerts at Staller Center each semester. Past repertoire has included Beethoven Symphony No. 3 and No. 7, Brahms Symphony No. 2 and No. 4, Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 and No. 5, Dvorak Symphony No. 8 and No. 9 "New World", Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 and other major orchestral repertoire including overtures and concertos. It is a very diverse orchestra made up of both music majors and minors, as well as qualified non-majors who have been involved in music in their high schools, music festivals and youth orchestras. Rehearsals are held weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in room 0111 of the music building.
Auditions take place the first Monday and Tuesday of each semester in music building room 2342. Sign up sheet for the auditions will be posted next to room 3304 the week before classes begin so that students can sign up for an audition when they arrive on campus. For the audition, students just need to play two short contrasting excerpts from a solo or concerto of their choice OR three contrasting standard orchestral excerpts.
The first rehearsal is on the first Tuesdayst of classes from 7pm to 9:30pm. The 7pm start for the first rehearsal is to accommodate any students who have classes until 6:50 p.m. Regular rehearsals are from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
