Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR)

US Department of Commerces have released phase I of the 2019 SBIR  program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in federal research and development (R&D) that has the potential for commercialization. 

Phase I funding aims to establish the technical merit, feasibility and commercial potential of the proposed R&D efforts and to determine the quality of the awardees’ performance before additional funding is granted in later phases of the program. 

NIST’s SBIR program supports research at the frontiers of measurement science to ensure that the U.S. system of measurements is firmly grounded in sound scientific and technical principles. Its research activities provide industry, academia and other federal agencies with measurement tools and standards to strengthen U.S. competitiveness and security. 

Small businesses may apply in the following areas: 

  • Advanced Communications, Networks and Scientific Data Systems

  • Advanced Manufacturing and Material Measurements  

  • Cybersecurity and Privacy 

  • Fundamental Measurement, Quantum Science and Measurement Dissemination  

  • Health and Biological Systems Measurements 

  • Physical Infrastructure and Resilience  

  • Exploratory Measurement Science

AIM DoD Cyber Security Assistance Grant

DoD Manufacturers:
The Advanced Institute for Manufacturing (AIM) is willing to assist small and medium manufacturers throughout New York State with department of defense contracts in meeting their DFARS cybersecurity requirements based on NIST 800-171 Special Publication. This includes assistance in cybersecurity risk assessments, project implementation for IT infrastructure, policy development, and employee training, and follow-up assessments with compliance letters that can be used to show contractors that requirements are being met. Up to 90% of project cost may be awarded, per eligible company.

Non-DoD Manufacturers Cybersecurity Gap Assessment Matching Award:
Phase I: Manufacturers can qualify for a $3,000 award to match the cash investment toward the cybersecurity gap assessment proposal that you choose. MTRC can connect you to a cybersecurity provider or you can choose one that you are interested in. Once the gap assessment proposal is completed, MTRC will review the assessment with you and discuss award process.

Phase II: Once you have completed the proposal process and begin any implementation, MTRC can review the next phase of investment to become cyber compliant and seek to award up to 30% back to the company.

Deadline: Funding for this award  will no longer be available September 30th, 2019.

fuzehub  FuzeHub Innovation Fund for Food, Beverage, and Agriculture

As part of Jeff Lawrence Innovation Fund, FuzeHub will administer a New York State Innovation Incentive Prize Program for Food, Beverage & Agriculture Technologies. The Innovation Incentive Prize Program will solicit proposals that support development of innovative products and/or solutions that will lead to more efficient operations within small scale farm businesses as well as food processing/beverage production businesses. Funding is limited and is suggested that applicants contact Julianne Clouthier if there are available program funds.

fuzehub  FuzeHub Innovation Fund

The Manufacturing Innovation Fund supports a set of activities designed to spur technology development and commercialization across New York State, including Manufacturing Innovation Grants.  The Fund is named for Jeff Lawrence, a champion of the New York manufacturing and entrepreneurial communities who passed away in 2015.

The Manufacturing Grants are designed to encourage collaboration between companies and non-profit organizations in New York State that work with the manufacturing industry. Round two will open on May 1 with a deadline of May 31 at 4:00 pm EST. Awards will be selected in July. Please be advised that FuzeHub is in the process of transitioning to a new and improved online application system for May 2019 funding round.

The Natural Gas Manufacturing Productivity Program provides matching grants up to $40,000 to help manufacturers whose top management commits the time and resources to eliminating waste and/or increasing productivity on the “shop floor” and in the office.

fuzehub NYSERDA’s 2019 Strategic Energy Management Training Program

This third-round, fully funded training program offers New York State manufacturing companies the following benefits at no cost:

  • Customized training and support in creating a comprehensive energy performance management plan, resulting in long-term cost savings
  • Expert coaching in industrial energy saving technology as well as the application of continuous improvement principles to energy management
  • An assessment of business practices at all levels, supportively transforming your company’s culture to improve energy intensity, efficiency, and productivity
  • Improvement of financial resiliency, brand perception, and sales 
  • Peer-to-peer knowledge sharing across the program
  • Optimization of NYSERDA and utility company incentive opportunities

Over the twelve-month program, your company can have expert support to create a comprehensive implementation plan for energy saving opportunities, an employee engagement plan, and energy performance reporting methodologies.

If your company meets the eligibility requirements of (1) paying into in the electric System Benefits Charge (SBC) and (2) having an annual facility-based energy expenditure of $500,000 or more, we encourage you to review this case study from recent program participant, Potters Industries, and NYSERDA’s Program Opportunity Notice 3411.

ny best  NY - Best Bridge Program

The NY-BEST BRIDGE Program is a business assistance program for battery and energy storage companies in New York State. BRIDGE stands for “Business Resources to Innovate, Develop, Grow and Excel” and through the NY-BEST BRIDGE Program, NY-BEST is providing energy storage start-ups and businesses the tools and resources they need to successfully grow their companies. The Program was made possible through funding support from National Grid.
