WHERE TO PARK - COMMUTER STUDENTS

Where to Park on Campus with a Commuter Permit

COMMUTER PARKING LOTS: Two permit options are available to Commuter Students, and dictate where students can park. Commuter parking lots are enforced Monday-Friday from 7am-4pm. Outside of those hours, these lots are available for use without penalty.

Commuter Standard Permit (Free): Vehicles with a Commuter Standard Permit must park in Lot 40. Students can utilize one of the many methods of transportation to get around campus including:

SBU Transit: Several routes to the heart of SBU's Main Campus leave from Lot 40 every 8-10 minutes during peak times of the academic year. New this Fall, look out for an East Campus Express Shuttle which will leave from Lot 40 and stop at South Campus then the Life Sciences tunnel, creating easier access to the Health Sciences Center (HSC).
You can always track the buses on our Live Tracker or by downloading the app; or
view the Shuttle Schedule/Map.

Bike Share: The Wolf Ride Bike Share program will be maintaining a bike station presence at Lot 40 again this year (approximately a 1.5 mile ride to the heart of campus); bikes are free for students, if returned within 60 minutes to another docking station on campus.

Commuter Premium Permit ($112.50/semester): Vehicles with a Commuter Premium Permit may park in designated spaces within Lots 2, 3, 5 and 6.

METERED LOTS: Commuter students without a permit may park in any Stony Brook University metered lot for a fee of $2.50/hour payable at the lot with a debit or credit card only (no cash is accepted). Metered lots are enforced Monday-Friday from 7am-7pm. Outside of those hours, there is no fee to park in these lots.

New for Fall 2023: We will be piloting a metered parking option in Lot 5. The flat rate will be $5 daily, reduced from the normal daily metered rate of $17.50. This offers an alternative to the commuter premium permit for students who may not frequent campus as often.

PARKING GARAGES: Commuter students without a permit may park in any Stony Brook University parking garage for a fee. The University has three parking garages. Two are located on East Campus (the Hospital Garage and the Health Sciences Center Garage) and one is located on West Campus (Administration Garage). View Parking Garage information and rates.

Parking garages are enforced every day. The Administration Garage, located on West Campus, is free on Saturday and Sunday.

EVENING STUDENTS: Evening commuter students may apply for a monthly parking pass in the Health Sciences Center Garage or the Administration Garage. If approved, this pass will grant students access to the Health Sciences Center Garage Monday-Friday between 2:30pm and 3am, or the Administration Garage Monday-Friday between 2:30pm and 11pm. View Parking Garage information and rates.

Payment for a monthly parking garage pass is due online via the Stony Brook Parking System no later than the first of the month. Students will pay for a full month of access, even if less than one month of service is used.
