MIC Related Research   |  Dr. Yi Wang

My primary research interests focus on second language acquisition, Chinese sociolinguistics, and study abroad research. As an applied linguist, I am interested in the sociolinguistic and social aspects of language use and learning, with a particular focus on transnational and study abroad contexts. My recent work examines the intersectionality of race, gender, and ethnicity of study abroad students and the impact on their use of languages as well as the multilayered language ideologies among nation-states, stakeholders, and study abroad students in China in the age of Belt and Road. Another line of my research deals with the process of third language acquisition (with a focus on East Asian languages) of multilingual individuals. Currently I am also working collaboratively on the sociolinguistic analysis of anti-Asian and Asian American hate speech on Twitter using a large-scale corpus with over 50 million tweets.
