For admission to the Ph.D . program, the following are normally required:
Bachelor's degree and official transcripts
A bachelor's degree is required. Students must present evidence that such a degree
will be awarded by the time they begin graduate work. Official electronic transcripts
sent directly from the educational institution are accepted as official. Electronic
transcripts are to be sent to

attended, including junior and senior college and graduate transcripts (if applicable).
You will need to upload copies of your transcripts onto the SLATE application system
in addition to official submission.

Cumulative GPA
≥ 3.0
A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (or its foreign equivalent) on a four-point
scale. If you have attended graduate school and obtained a master’s degree, and the
GPA is over 3.0, then the GPA of the undergraduate school can be below 3.0 for regular admission.
Three (3) letters of recommendation
Letters of recommendation from three former instructors are required. If the applicant
already has pertinent work experience, e.g. as part of a software development team,
some of these letters can also be from employers who are qualified to comment on the
candidate’s qualifications. Your letters of recommendation are generated through
SLATE at the time of the application; the recommender can they reply electronically.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Stony Brook Graduate School Policy has long required a GRE general test score from
all applicants. The Graduate School at Stony Brook has decided to waive the GRE general
test score requirement for the period of two years, effective immediately. Applicants
will not have to submit GRE general test scores for the 2021-2022 application cycle.

TOEFL
Score
Non-native speakers of English must have obtained a minimum score of 600 (paper),
250 (computer), or 90 (iBT) on the

Acceptance
Students must be accepted by both the Department of Linguistics and the Graduate School.

Financial Aid
Financial aid is awarded in the form of assistantships, fellowships, and tuition scholarships (these sources of financial support are primarily offered only to Ph.D. students). There are special opportunities for students of African-American, Hispanic, or Native American background (M.A. students within this program are generally only considered for these types of financial support). Applicants are also encouraged to explore opportunities for external funding independent of departmental and university resources.
