Apply to the MA-TESOL Program

APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 15 for international students
                                                       June 1st for domestic students

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis starting in early April. For best consideration, we strongly encourage you to apply to the program as early as possible. Your application will not be considered until all required materials are received by the department.

For admission to the MA program in TESOL, the following are required:

Bachelor's degree and official transcripts

A bachelor's degree is required. Students must present evidence that such a degree will be awarded by the time they begin graduate work.

Requirements for submitting Official School Transcripts:

Applicants are to submit official transcripts from the college/institutions where their degree was conferred. The Graduate School admissions GPA requirement will be a 3.0 cumulative GPA from the institution/college where the degree was conferred. All official transcripts are required by the Graduate School Admissions with degree conferral.

Cumulative GPA ≥ 3.0
A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (or its foreign equivalent) on a four-point scale. If you have attended graduate school and obtained a master’s degree, and the GPA is over 3.0, then the GPA of the undergraduate school can be below 3.0 for regular admission.

Three (3) letters of recommendation
As many letters as possible (but at minimum one letter) should be from instructors who can comment on your performance as a student.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Those applying are not required to submit a GRE score.

Curriculum Vitae or Resume

Foreign language proficiency

Native speakers of English must provide evidence of at least one year of study of a language other than English at the college level with a grade of C or better. 

In addition to undergraduate course credit, students may also satisfy the language requirement for certification by passing the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test at proficiency level equivalent to one year of college study. Please visit the College Board’s CLEP Tests page (https://clep.collegeboard.org/clep-exams) for the most current information.

Students who are seeking New York State certification will need to satisfy additional requirements for foreign language study before receiving certification.

TOEFL or IELTS Score

  • Non-native speakers of English must have obtained a minimum total score of 90 on iBT TOEFL or 6.5 on IELTS.
  • Minimum scores on the speaking component of the TOEFL/IELTS are 22 (iBT TOEFL) or 6.5 (IELTS). Accepted students with scores 22-24 (iBT TOEFL) or 6.5-7 (IELTS) will be required to complete
  • OAE 594  in their first semester in the program.

Please note that non-native speakers who are seeking New York State certification must achieve a speaking component score of 28 (iBT) or the equivalent.

Acceptance
Students must be accepted by both the Department of Linguistics and the Graduate School.
