Individuals Impacted by Acts of Inhumanity

In support of students and scholars whose education or research has been impacted by global conflict, Stony Brook University offers the following scholarship and support opportunities.

Eligibility Requirements

    • Individual must hold refugee status within the United States.
    • Application for refugee status must have been submitted no more than one (1) year prior to the program start date at Stony Brook University.
    • Individual is responsible for their own travel to Stony Brook University.  Stony Brook is unable to support relocation costs.
    • All applicants must submit proof of refugee status and valid passport or Refugee Travel Document within the application.
    • All Ukrainian students or scholars whose study or research has been impacted by the war may be eligible.

Stony Brook University offers three categories of refugee support.  Scholarships and support are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Deadline for the Fall 2022 semester is July 1.  Please select your category for additional program details and requirements.

    Current SBU Students

    Current Stony Brook University students who meet the eligibility requirements detailed above may be eligible to receive one or both of the following scholarships:

    Full On-Campus Housing Scholarship
    Stony Brook University will waive the cost of on-campus housing for one semester for students currently residing in Campus Residences. 

    Meal Plan Scholarship
    Stony Brook University will provide a free standard meal plan for one semester for current SBU students.  Students do not need to be living in Campus Residences to qualify.

    Program Duration
    Program start dates coincide with Stony Brook's Academic Calendar. Scholarships are offered for Fall, Spring, and Summer Sessions and last one semester.  If a scholarship is awarded for a Summer II Session start date, the scholarship will extend to include the subsequent Fall semester.


    Undergraduate Students

    Current, active students studying in an overseas university may apply to Stony Brook University as non-matriculated visiting students.  Students may be eligible to receive one or more of the following scholarships:

    Full Tuition Scholarship
    Visiting non-matriculated students will receive a full tuition scholarship covering the cost of Stony Brook tuition.

    Full On-Campus Housing Scholarship
    Stony Brook University will waive the cost of on-campus housing.

    Meal Plan Scholarship
    Stony Brook University will provide a free standard meal plan.  Students do not need to be living in Campus Residences to qualify.

    Program Duration

      • Academic Transcript (Official is preferred, but unofficial will be accepted.)
      • Language Proficiency or request for an oral interview
      • Statement of Purpose

    Graduate Students

  • SCHOLARS


    Faculty, Research Scholars, and Post-Doctoral Scholars

    Faculty, Research Scholars, and Post-Doctoral Scholars whose research has been severely impacted or halted due to their refugee status may apply to continue their research at Stony Brook University. 

    Individuals must be hosted by a comparable academic department.  The Office of Global Affairs will reach out to potential host departments with your CV and Statement of Purpose on your behalf to determine fit.  Please include clear descriptions of your research in your Statement of Purpose to assist with placement.  You may be contacted via email for clarification on research interests.

    A full list of Academic Schools, Colleges, and Departments is available on the Stony Brook University website.  Please review the list and note the department that best fits your research field in your application.

    All supported scholars may be eligible to receive:

    Full Housing Scholarship
    Stony Brook University will provide free housing for up to six (6) months. 

    Host Department Support
    The Host Department will provide adequate office space for the duration of the program.  Scholars will also receive access to campus resources (library, email, internet, computer, etc.).  Access to additional research equipment and supplies will be at the discretion of the Host Department.

    Additional support for living expenses may be available.  Scholars will be notified if extra support will be provided and the duration of that support.

    Program Duration
    Scholar support will be provided for an initial period of up to six (6) months.  Extensions of research support will depend on the capabilities of the Host Department.  The program start date will be mutually agreed upon between the Scholar and the Host Department.

    English Language Training

    Stony Brook University offers two types of free English language training to refugees.  Please review the categories below to determine which best fits your needs:

    CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH ACADEMIC ENGLISH


    Conversational English

    Conversational English is for recent refugees who want to improve their English language skills and practice verbal communication. This program offers informal placements with instructors or staff who will focus on enhancing language for everyday use in the United States and building confidence in speaking, reading, and writing in English.

    The Conversational English is free of charge to selected applicants.  No other scholarship support is provided for this program and no additional documentation is required.

    Program Duration
    Program placements will be coordinated on a rolling basis, and selected participants will work directly with instructors to schedule meeting times.

    Conversational English is supported by Stony Brook University's Program in Writing and Rhetoric, Department of Linguistics, and Intensive English Center.


    Academic English

    Individuals looking to improve their English language skills for academic purposes may apply for admission to the Intensive English Center (IEC).  The rigorous curriculum combined with cultural and social events provide students a dynamic environment to improve their language skills, create new friendships, and prepare for future success.

    No additional documentation is required to apply to the IEC.  Individuals will be evaluated for English language ability at the beginning of the session.

    Academic English students may be eligible to receive one or more of the following scholarships:

    Full Tuition Scholarship
    Students will receive a full tuition scholarship covering the cost of IEC tuition.

    Full On-Campus Housing Scholarship
    Stony Brook University will waive the cost of on-campus housing.

    Meal Plan Scholarship
    Stony Brook University will provide a free standard meal plan.  Students do not need to be living in Campus Residences to qualify.

    Program Duration
    Program start dates coincide with Stony Brook's Academic Calendar.  Scholarships are offered for the Fall and Spring semesters and Summer Session II and last one semester.  If a scholarship is awarded for a Summer II Session start date, the scholarship may extend to include the subsequent Fall semester.

    Current, active students may apply to transfer to Stony Brook University at the end of their scholarship if they successfully pass IEC Level 104.  Application fees will be waived, and the Admissions office will be flexible regarding required application materials (e.g. official transcripts).
