President’s Distinguished Travel Grants

 A​s part of the Arts, Humanities, and Lettered Social Sciences initiative, we are inviting applications for the President's Distinguished Travel Grants. 2020-21 deadline for applications is (likely end of March 2021) to be announced in Feb. 2021.

The FAHSS committee will review the applications and award approximately 25 travel grants up to $2000 each. Awards will be announced by the beginning of May 2020.

The grant is available for travel from September 1, 2020 - August 31, 2021. Due to the CoVID disruptions, the Spring 2021 deadline will also consider any research travel from all of 2020, which had been cancelled, rescheduled, or not previously submitted due to personal or professional obligations.

Guidance

The guidance below can help applicants avoid some common errors and/or misunderstandings. Please note that these are not official guidelines, given that the committee's practices vary from year to year (based on its forming consensus among the committee members), however, the pattern has generally remained consistent.

  • Lecturers and research staff (such as library personnel) are eligible as well.

  • The application must include a moderately detailed budget. It has to make clear what you plan to spend the money on. Lack of clarity about how the money will be used is the most frequent reason for rejection and requests to revise-and-resubmit. The budget must indicate specific destinations/locations, approx. dates, and estimates for the specific carrier(s)/organizations.

  • You do not need to apply for the maximum award amount(s), and it may even be to your advantage to not do so.
