Interests:My research covers the period from 1919 to 1965 and focuses on the urban landscapes of leisure and vices of Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Rio de Janeiro. My work explores the historical process behind the rise in these cities of interconnected “pleasurescapes” and their impact on visual culture and everyday life. I ask how seaside hotel-casinos, nightlife, cabarets, cafes, theater, legal “red districts,” and non-medical drug use unfolded social, cultural, and economic forces affecting individuals and institutions. My work will reveal the effects of “pleasurescapes” on politics, territoriality, and state and national identity formation processes in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Cuba.
