Federal Aid

In order to be considered for financial aid from the Federal Title IV programs, students must meet basic eligibility requirements.

The federal financial aid application process begins with the completion of the  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

In order for us to receive a copy of your FAFSA results, you must include the Stony Brook University federal school code  002838 when completing your FAFSA.

Academic Year Tax Year Submit FAFSA as early as
2019-2020 2017 10/1/18
2020-2021 2018 10/1/19

  The priority deadline is February 15th 

In order to be considered for certain need-based federal financial aid (Federal Work Study, Federal SEOG) students must complete their FAFSA by the priority filing deadline.

Note:  Summer Aid begins our academic year. If you are looking for aid for Summer 2020, you will need to have a valid 2020/2021 FAFSA on file.


Recommended Steps Prior to Completing the FAFSA

  • Apply for a federal ID (FSA ID):  The student and one parent, if the student is a dependent student, should apply for a federal ID. The FSA ID application can be found at
