The Barry Goldwater Scholarship

Goldwater Awardees

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is one of the premier awards for undergraduate STEM researchers in the United States. Prospective applicants must be nominated by Stony Brook's faculty committee in order to compete at the national level. 

Interested in learning more? Review the eligibility criteria before  completing a pre-application by November 6, 2020. If your pre-application is approved, SBU's Director for Fellowships Advising will grant you access to the full application and provide information on next steps.

Eligibility:

  • Submit a pre-application by November 6, 2020; full application by the December 7, 2020 Campus Nomination Deadline.

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

  • Be a full-time matriculated undergraduate Sophomore or Junior (Junior status preferred). For more information on how Goldwater defines these terms  click here.

  • Intend to pursue a PhD in the natural sciences, math, or engineering. It is highly unlikely for students pursuing an MD to be selected, in certain cases, exceptional prospective MD-PhD students will be considered.

  • Have a 3.7 GPA or higher to be competitive.

  • Have a strong record of undergraduate research in STEM
