Assistant Professor in Data Journalism

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in mass communication, communication, media studies, digital communication, or a related field.  A Demonstrated track record of research in data science or a related field as evidenced by publications and academic presentations.  Experience teaching at the undergraduate level.  A commitment to building an extramural funding portfolio.  A commitment to promoting diversity.  A commitment to advancing collaborative interdisciplinary research.

Preferred Qualifications

A demonstrated track record of research in science, health, environment, and/or risk communication as evidenced by publications and academic presentations.  Experience teaching at the graduate level.  A demonstrated track record of obtaining extramurally funded research.  Experience with collaborative interdisciplinary research.

Responsibilities & Requirements

Stony Brook University's School of Journalism seeks to fill a new tenure track Assistant Professorship in Data Journalism beginning August 2020.  The ideal candidate for this position will be expected to advance a track record of innovative, extramurally funded research in the area of data journalism. The ideal candidate will have an interest in working to advance the School of Journalism's commitment to supporting science, health, environment and/or risk mass communication (ComSHER).  Candidates should have strong quantitative research skills and hold a Ph.D. in journalism, mass communication, communication, digital communication, or a related field and have a demonstrated track record of research in data journalism.  While we are open to a range of specific research foci and methodological approaches, a commitment to ethical, socially responsible communication and to interdisciplinary collaboration are required.

Our faculty draw from extensive experience in print, radio, television, and digital-native news organizations to train our students to be solid reporters for legacy news platforms as well as new media.  We are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications and are in the process of creating a master's program in science communication in partnership with the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science.

This position represents a growth strategy in the School of Journalism that seeks to leverage Stony Brook University's strengths in science and science communication, and advance our strength in data journalism.  We seek a candidate with the potential to build on the established reputation of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and help grow a concentrated focus on ComSHER in data journalism with the School of Journalism.  The successful candidate will help to create and teach new coursework in our journalism degree program and work collaboratively with the School of Journalism faculty, our affiliated faculty at the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, and other university departments and schools.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain a recognized program of research in data journalism, especially in the area of science, health, environment, and/or risk communication.
  • Work collaboratively with researchers from other areas of campus to advance interdisciplinary research.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the School of Journalism, especially in the area of data journalism.
  • Supervise B.A. and M.A. theses and support the School of Journalism's diverse student body through mentorship and teaching.
  • Advance meaningful service contributions within and beyond the university.

Special Notes

This is a tenure track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Anticipated Start Date:  Fall 2020.
