About the Program

The Department of Technology and Society offers an “Accelerated Bachelor of Science/Master of Technological Systems Management” to qualified Stony Brook undergraduate TSM students. Admitted students are allowed to take a 2 graduate courses that will be counted towards both their undergraduate and graduate degree requirements.  This reduces the number of undergraduate electives that students take from 3 to 1.

The Accelerated BS/MS program is designed to allow Technology and Society students with good academic records to graduate with both a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in five years. The major benefit of the program is that it allows students to apply graduate courses taken during their senior year in undergraduate study towards both undergraduate and graduate degrees. As a result, students can complete both degrees in five years (i.e., just one extra year/two semesters).

Requirement for Admission

You need to be a Technology and Society student with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the time of application. To be considered, applicants must have completed at least three specific Technology and Society courses (EST 202, EST 391, and EST 393) at Stony Brook with an overall Grade Point Average of 3.25 or higher in the three courses.  The Graduate School also requires minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the end of senior year to matriculate into the graduate program (i.e., you will be dismissed from the program if you fail to meet this condition).

Admission into the program needs to be approved by the department’s Graduate Admissions Committee.

Application:

Students are encouraged to apply to this five-year program at the end of their junior year, subject to the requirements below.

  • You must see our Graduate Program Coordinator to declare your intention to enroll and submit a one-page admission form “Application Form to Graduate School for the Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree.”
  • Application forms should be accompanied by a resume, a statement of purpose, at least two recommendation letters. At least one recommendation letter must be from a current Technology and Society department faculty member.
  • Applicants interested in a graduate degree that cannot meet these criteria are encouraged to apply directly to the M.S. program.

Before the end of final semester as an undergraduate student, you must see the Graduate Program Coordinator to prepare documents to matriculate into the Graduate School. If you do not contact the Graduate Program Coordinator, we will assume you are no longer interested in continuing in the accelerated BS/MS program as a graduate student.

  • As an undergraduate, the student must receive permission from the Graduate School in order to take graduate courses that will count towards both B.S. and M.S. degrees. The form is located here
  • Before completing undergraduate requirements, you will need to apply for admission to the Graduate School.  The form is located here

Students that do not follow the two steps above will be terminated from the Accelerated program; if you want to enter the M.S. program, you will need to follow the standard admission procedures for the M.S. program.

Registering for graduate courses:

To register for graduate courses in your senior year, you must fill out “Permission for Undergraduate Students in the Accelerated Degree Program” form prior to the start of the academic semester. This form must be signed by the Graduate Program Director.

Getting BS degree:

You will receive your B.S. degree when you have fulfilled the undergraduate program requirements regardless of whether you are still in the Accelerated Program or not.
