Accelerated BS/MS Program

BS/MS Accelerated Program

The Department of Technology and Society offers an “Accelerated Bachelor of Science/Master of Technological Systems Management” to qualified Stony Brook undergraduate TSM students. Admitted students are allowed to take 2 graduate courses that will be counted towards both their undergraduate and graduate degree requirements.  This reduces the number of undergraduate electives that students take from 3 to 1.

About the Program

The Accelerated BS/MS program is designed to allow Technology and Society students with good academic records to graduate with both a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in five years. The major benefit of the program is that it allows students to apply graduate courses, taken during their senior year in undergraduate study, towards both undergraduate and graduate degrees. As a result, students can complete both degrees in five years (i.e., just one extra year/two semesters).

Requirement for Admission

You need to be a Technology and Society student with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the time of application to enroll. To be considered, applicants must have completed at least three specific Technology and Society courses (EST 202, EST 391, and EST 393) at Stony Brook with an overall Grade Point Average of 3.25 or higher in the three courses.  The Graduate School also requires minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the end of senior year to matriculate into the graduate program (i.e., you will be dismissed from the program if you fail to meet this condition).

Admission into the program needs to be approved by the department’s Graduate Admissions Committee.

Students are encouraged to apply to this five-year program at the end of their junior year, though applications may be submitted up to one full semester before graduation, subject to the requirements below.

  • You must see our Graduate Program Coordinator to declare your intention to enroll and submit a one-page admission form " Application Form to Graduate School for the Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree.”
  • Application forms should be accompanied by a resume, a statement of purpose, at least two recommendation letters and an adviser-approved SUNY Program Schedule. At least one recommendation letter must be from a current Technology and Society department faculty member.
  • Applications must be approved by the Department of Technology and Society’s Graduate Admissions Committee.
  • Applicants interested in a graduate degree that cannot meet these criteria are encouraged to apply directly to the M.S. program.

Registering for graduate courses:

Undergraduate students in the accelerated program must receive permission from the department’s Graduate Program Director and the Graduate School to take the two (2) graduate courses that will count towards both B.S. and M.S. degrees. The form is located  here.   This form must be completed and signed prior to the start of the academic semester.

Matriculating into the master’s program:

Before the end of your final undergraduate semester, you will need to apply for admission to the Graduate School.  Please see the Graduate Program Coordinator to prepare these documents.  If you do not contact the Graduate Program Coordinator, we will assume you are no longer interested in continuing in the accelerated BS/MS program as a graduate student. The Graduate School’s form is located here.

Students who do not follow these requirements will be terminated from the Accelerated program; if you want to enter the M.S. program, you will need to follow the standard admission procedures for the M.S. program.

Getting BS degree:

You will receive your B.S. degree when you have fulfilled the undergraduate program requirements regardless of whether you are still in the Accelerated Program or not.
