Since 1986, the STEM Smart research group within the Department of Technology and Society (DTS) has been engaged in the development and creation of programs that deliver a variety of enrichment, support activities, and services to underrepresented minority and economically underserved students. The programs focus specifically on engaging students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields and majors. The programs also support those students who have expressed a desire to study a STEM discipline that leads to professional licensure in the State of New York. It is important to note that STEM Smart follows a definition of STEM that does not include health and social sciences in the definition. This is in alignment with the definition of STEM as defined by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
