Monday, April 15

1:00pm - 2:00pm  Ashley Schiff Preserve "Walks in the Woods.”  The Ashley Schiff Preserve is a green gem of the Stony Brook campus. The Ashley Schiff Preserve dates back to 1970, when it was dedicated to Dr. Schiff’s memory, a former and popular Political Science professor. The Preserve sits on 28.2 acres of woodland in between the area of Roth Quad/Life Sciences and the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS). The signs ask visitors to “Take Only Photos, Leave Only Footprints.” Representatives from the Friends of Ashley Schiff Park Preserve will lead a guided tour and short hike through this beautiful ecosystem full of vibrant wildlife and vegetation.   The focus will be on the history of the Preserve, identifying prominent plant species and highlighting geologic features.  Meet at the preserve monument rock/trail kiosk entrance to the preserve trail located just off the outer edge of Circle Road across from the Roth Quad entrance (Lake Dr.) For more information about the Preserve, please visit:  https://ashleyschiff.org/

4 pm – 5pm – WANG THEATER:EARTHSTOCK: UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SHOWCASE.  A poster event featuring students doing research/ creative activities related to various aspects of the environment.

5pm – Wang Theater: KEYNOTE SPEAKER Dr. Heather Lynch - It Takes a Village: Saving Antarctica in the Anthropocene. This presentation will discuss how it takes a collaborative effort to make a change.  Biography:  Heather Lynch is the Institute for Advanced Computational Science Endowed Chair for Ecology and Evolution at Stony Brook University and the inaugural Director of the Stony Brook Collaborative for the Earth. She is a National Geographic Explorer, a AAAS Leshner Leadership Fellow for Science Engagement, a Pew Marine Conservation Fellow, and was the first ecologist to win the Blavatnik National Award for Life Sciences in 2019. Her research is focused on the impacts of tourism and climate change on Antarctic penguins, and she works closely with the Antarctic Treaty Parties on a range of conservation issues. She has an A.B. in Physics from Princeton University and received her M.A. in Physics and Ph.D. in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University.

12 pm - ICTE Conference Room - SBS N244: WILLIAM KONSTANT.  Conservationist and Author William "Bill" Konstant will share how his work as a primate technician at Stony Brook University in the 1980s led to a career as a wildlife biologist working with some of the world's leading conservation organizations.

4 pm - Central Reading Room, Lab A: STEM WIKIPEDIA EDIT-A-THON.  Join University Libraries and the Young Investigators Review for a STEM Wikipedia Edit-a-thon! Participants will receive guidance on Wikipedia editing procedures and how to best contribute content using library databases. All students are welcome, whether you are a beginner or expert at contributing to Wikipedia. Register now as space is limited.

6:00-7:30 pm – Union Ballroom: GROW YOUR FUTURE.  This event theme is centered around “growing the future you want to see,” and focuses on educating students on how to advocate for causes important to them and connect with their elected and appointed officials while having fun with plants. We will have snacks, fun activities like pot painting and kahoot, and will be giving out live succulents to students on a first come first serve basis! 12 PM - Wang’s Center Lecture Hall 1: DAVID GOOD, the son of the AnthropologistKenneth Good, and founder of theYanomami Foundation, will present on pioneering research of how environmental disruptions may affect the lives of his maternal family in the Amazon rainforest. A panel discussion will follow David's presentation.

1pm – 4pm – SAC: ORGANIC GARDENING.  Join us for theOrganic Gardening event featuring Val Doyle as well as representatives from Hobbs Farm, Cornell, the Miller Place Historical Society, the East Moriches Historical Society, and ReWild of Long Island. Throughout the event, Val will conduct 30-minute sessions over three hours on Thursday and Friday, covering topics such as composting, establishing organic gardens with biodiversity and permaculture, integrating art and meditation into your garden, seed germination, and effective transplanting and weeding methods. 12:00-12:45 pm – Academic Mall Fountain: Tree Identification Hike.  Join Healthier U and Stony Brook's Horticulture team for a tree identification hike on West Campus. Meet at noon at the fountain on the Academic Mall, close to the Administration building, for this 45-minute hike that will explore the variety of tree species growing on our campus. Comfortable shoes and sun protection recommended. SB Engaged

 

Saturday, April 20

11 am - 3 pm: Stony Brook Southampton: WARNER ISLAND BEACH CLEAN UP.  There is a fantastic volunteer opportunity to clean Warner Island, a small island in Shinnecock Bay, that typically collects trash coming into the bay from the Atlantic Ocean. The trip includes a boat ride, fantastic wildlife tour guides, lunch, and a free large recyclable tote bag (made from plastic recovered from the ocean). This event is open by RSVP to enrolled students, faculty, staff, and their guests at the Southampton Campus. 5:30pm-7:00pm: Hidden Treasures: Fabscrap x Upcycling Workshop. Upcycle and repurpose with Hidden Treasures and the Center for Service Learning and Community Service! Join us for a DIY project where you can make your own crafts with pre-loved items and pre-owned materials to extend their use. The event will be in two parts. The first part will include a brief guest presentation with a community partner, FABSCRAP, to raise awareness and introduce textile waste and sustainability. SBEngaged link is here! Topics include:

10:30 am - 2 pm: West Meadow Beach Cleanup Weekend Event.  Environmental Club will be collaborating with our club advisor and avid beach cleaner Professor Joe Labriola, The Inter-Fraternity and Sorority Council, and The SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) to clean West Meadow Beach. Meet in theSAC parking lot at 10:30 and head to West Meadow from there. We will be providing work gloves, trash bags, buckets, and trash pickers to participants.
