Annette Shideler

Interim Director
TESOL Teacher Education Program

Annette Shideler

Dr. Shideler started teaching in 1972 as a bilingual Head Start teacher in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. In the course of her career, she was a bilingual third grade teacher in Bushwick; an elementary Spanish as a Second Language and ESL teacher in Little Flower School in Wading River and an ESL teacher in Shoreham-Wading River, South Manor and Eastport.

She later became President of NYSTESOL in 1993-94, and earned her Ed.D from Columbia University in 1998. Along the way, she earned a degree as a Systems Analyst. She spent the next 11 years of her K-12 public school career as the administrative Director of Technology for the Hauppauge and Commack School Districts.

In 2007, Dr. Shideler had the wonderful opportunity to leverage both careers. Since then she has conducted workshops for Western Suffolk Boces and individual school districts in Nassau and Suffolk working with ESL/Bilingual teachers on various software applications; identifying appropriate curriculum improvements, hardware upgrades and Internet sites; as well as specific devices such as SmartBoards, iPods and, most recently, iPads.

Most recently, Dr. Shideler has been integrally involved in the creation of two eBooks which were compilations of essays, videos and audio files created by ELL students. The first was with ELL students in Amityville Middle School. The students were challenged to write/video what they wished someone had told them when they first arrived in the community. It’s a powerful book about staying out of gangs, and staying in the country legally. The second eBook was a compilation of work from ELL students in 15 K-12 school districts in Nassau and Suffolk. Students reflected on the Universal Human Rights and how their lives were echoed in these rights.
