FAQ: International Admitted Students
If classes continue to be offered through alternate modes of instruction for the fall semester (i.e. distance learning / online) it is not clear what that will mean for international students and their nonimmigrant status, as SEVP and the U.S. Department of State have not communicated how long these special accommodations for F-1 and J-1 students will extend.
We will provide updates as soon as possible related to any changes to the semester's schedule.
If you have not already done so, apply for your I-20 in accessVIS. Our office of Visa and Immigration Services is developing a new process to send I-20’s electronically. Once it is ready, you’ll receive an email with a link to download it.
We understand that many embassies have paused appointments for visas. We are hopeful that circumstances will improve and allow for visa services to resume in the late spring.
Summer courses will be offered online at Stony Brook University. You can enroll through the Global Summer Institute. Students offered conditional admission may be eligible for an online Intensive English Program course.
You may connect with an international counselor at any time. You can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or schedule a video call with a counselor. Please select to schedule an appointment with our international counselors, Youssef Wahib or Jing Li. We also encourage you to attend any of our upcoming virtual events.
All requests to defer enrollment to a future semester will be reviewed after June 1. This will allow the University to confirm our fall class and evaluate our capacity to provide classes, in addition to the academic and campus services needed to educate our students for future semesters. Please complete and submit this form to provide us with additional information. You will receive a response by June 30. If you are still considering enrolling at Stony Brook in fall 2020, we advise you to pay your initial deposits immediately to reserve your space. These will be credited for a future term if your deferral request is approved.

We are evaluating policies on IB and A-level courses. We will let you know once policy decisions have been reached.
Continue to participate in your classes online or whichever mode of instruction they are being offered. Towards the end of the semester, we will contact all accepted students regarding academic documentation requirements.
We understand that there may be disruptions in services at other institutions related to COVID-19. We will evaluate each situation and be as flexible and accommodating as possible.
