Stony Brook University Given Honors & Awards

Student Program Awards

Award Criteria: Awarded to an innovative student program sponsored by a recognized organization registered with the Department of Student Activities OR supported by a campus department, appealed to a wide audience, was well planned, organized, and executed, and made a significant impact on the University community. Program must not have previously received an award in the same category within the past two years.
Advocacy Program Award
Honors a unique program that makes the campus community aware of a major social issue and  implements an action-based response .
Community Service Program Award

Awarded to a community service program or project that has helped others in the community and provided enrichment through  active service and service learning.

Educational Program Award
Awarded to a creative program that promotes greater awareness of an existing academic, political, or social issue through educational efforts that  enhance student learning and provide a meaningful exchange of ideas .
Multicultural Program Award
Recognizes an innovative program that promotes cross-cultural learning and interaction, educates the campus community, and appeals to a diverse audience.
Recreational and Leisure Activities Program Award
Recognizes an outstanding recreational or leisure program (e.g. sporting, fitness, games, crafts, etc.) whose outcome had a significant impact on the University community.
Social Program Award
Awarded to an exceptional campus program that has broad-based appeal and provides opportunities to meet new people.

Student Organization Awards

Award Criteria: Awarded to a  recognized organization registered with the Department of Student Activities, must be in good standing with the University, fulfills the mission of the organization, provides a strong sense of community for its members, plans and presents appropriate programs or services, and represents the University well at all times. Organization must not have previously received an award in the same category within the past two years.

 

Best New Organization Award
  Honors an organization newly registered within the past 12 months and is dedicated to student life. This organization takes the initiative to make itself visible on campus, has grown in membership since its recognition, and shows potential for continued growth and success.
Collaboration Award
  Honors a student organization that has consistently collaborated with a variety of student groups and/or University departments throughout the academic year to produce quality activities and/or services.
Student Life Enhancement Award
  Honors an organization for developing and implementing improvements in the quality of student life. Organization fosters positive change within the Stony Brook community with focus on enhancing the student experience through effective programming and/or student activism.
Distinguished Service Award
  Honors an organization that has made a continuous effort to service the student body and the University community. This organization's efforts are exceptional, meaningful, and make a lasting impact on the campus.
Most Outstanding Organization Award
  Honors an organization which has been able to fulfill its mission, involve the campus in its purpose, plays a leadership role on campus, is involved in the campus community, is open minded and diverse, has the ability to accept and overcome challenges, and sustains itself in creative ways.

Student Organization Advisor Award

Award Criteria: Awarded to a faculty or staff member who serves as an advisor to a club or organization. Advisor must not have previously received an award in the same category within the past two years.

 

Outstanding Advisor Award
Honors a faculty or staff member who serves as an advisor to a student club or organization. Advisor is involved with the student leaders, offers knowledge and experience to the organization, and provides assistance and support on an ongoing basis

Office of Commuter Student Services Awards

Each semester, the Office of Commuter Student Services recognizes an undergraduate commuter student who has positively impacted Stony Brook University by contributing to the success of a campus department or office.

This student is awarded with a certificate of recognition and a gift certificate to the bookstore.

US PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD
  Individuals and groups are eligible to receive federal recognition from the President of the United States for hours served in the community over a 12-month period. As a certifying organization, Stony Brook University can assist individuals and groups with verifying their volunteer hours and submission of applications. PRESIDENT’S HIGHER EDUCATION COMMUNITY SERVICE HONOR ROLL
  PresidentsStony Brook University has been recognized for its community engagement on the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in four different categories. For  Interfaith Community Service, SBU has been named to the Honor Roll with Distinction as one of 45 educational institutions. SBU was also named to the Honor Roll for the following three categories  Community ServiceEconomic Opportunity, and  Education. To continue to maintain this recognition, we need to know how the students are volunteering, share your experience with us here to help SBU maintain recognition on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. In addition to sharing your experience with us, you can apply for individual recognition for the US President's Volunteer Service Award!
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT CLASSIFICATION
 
Carnegie The Classification is provided to institutions that have a proven record of community engagement, and revisited every five years to determine if new and returning institutions qualify for this recognition. Stony Brook has    a long history as a community-​engaged institution with various initiatives. Each year SBU students, staff, and faculty take part in opportunities that make meaningful and lasting contributions to communities.  The reach of SBU’s community service has no bounds. Initiatives take place across campus, Long Island, New York City, nationally, and internationally.  To continue to maintain this recognition, we need to know how the students are volunteering, share your experience with us here to help SBU maintain recognition for the Community Engagement Classification.
