Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical Engineering is the branch of civil engineering concerned with the design and construction of foundations, slopes, retaining walls, embankments, tunnels, levees, landfills and similar facilities; and with the engineering characterization and behavior of the ground and its constituent materials.  At Stony Brook University, the Geotechnical Engineering group is focused on the behavior of geo-materials with special emphases on sustainability and resilient applications including energy foundations, thermal and energy geotechnics, and the use of recycling materials for geo-structures.
