Research Interests

Dr. Flora’s engineering career and research interest has focused on understanding and predicting the sediment processes in riverine environments. Through field data collection and advanced computational fluid dynamics modeling, he has worked to improve how engineers design new bridge foundations and discover potential vulnerabilities in existing bridges. His Ph.D research studied how to improve the accuracy of numerical modeling of rivers by incorporating vegetation into the simulations, quantifying the importance of using high-resolution multibeam sonar data for the channel bathymetry and understanding the uncertainty introduced into model results through various input parameters. His current research aim is to improve the design of hydrokinetic installations through computer modeling of the flow and sediment processes to assist in the development of this renewable energy resource.
