Andrew Bae, undergraduate researcher advised by Dr. Xu, receives the 2023 Barry Goldwater Scholarship
Andrew Bae, undergraduate student in the Honors College majoring in applied mathematics and statistics with a minor in computer science and advised by Dr. Susu Xu, is one of only two SBU students to receive the 2023 Barry Goldwater Scholarship, a prestigious national award for undergraduates.
Andrew's work, which resulted in a conference paper, focused on understanding how and why the AI algorithms employed by existing state-of-the-art
autonomous driving perception models have distinct accuracy on predicting trajectories
of different groups, and thus result in biased safety issues. The conceptual figure
below, for example, illustrates how vulnerable pedestrian groups (elders and children)
behave differently from adults.

His story is a testament to the importance of multidisciplinarity in solving complex civil engineering problems related to smart urban systems and beyond.
