Dr. Khosronejad is heading to Spain!

Dr. K.Our very own Dr. Ali Khosronejad has been awarded a prestigious Senior Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for the 2022-2023 academic year to join researchers and faculty members at the University of Carlos III of Madrid, Spain. He will conduct a research project concerning biosocial flow dynamics of human breathing to develop science-based mitigation strategies for COVID-19 and similar pandemics in the future.  Research objectives of Dr. Khosronejad’s while participating in the Fulbright Program include (a) determining the traveling distance of the saliva particles during coughing and breathing and (b) measuring the effectiveness of face masks for limiting the spreading of the saliva particles during breathing and coughing in collaboration with researchers in Spain and Europe.

Dr. Khosronejad and collaborators recently published a paper in the American Institute of Physics (AIP) journal Physics of Fluids focusing on respiratory flow and breathing while wearing or not wearing a face mask. Dr. Khosronejad's research determined that simply breathing without a face mask can transport saliva droplets 7 feet or more. Several news outlets picked up the story and have published articles based on Dr. Khosronejad's results. Web articles have been written up in the American Institute of Physics, News Medical and EurekAlert to name just a few.

Regarding this incredible opportunity, Dr. Khosronejad said, "The Fulbright Award will allow me to connect with scholars in Europe, learn from them, and highlight my research outcomes in the European scientific community. In addition, the Fulbright Award will help me discover new lines of scientific collaborations with European researchers."

We couldn't be more excited for Dr. Khosronejad's upcoming adventure and wish him much success in his research and collaborations!
