Welcome From the Chair

Dr. Walker

   Harold W. Walker, PhD, PE
   Professor and Chair

Here at Stony Brook University, the Department of Civil Engineering is reaching new heights in research and student success. The department is a vibrant and diverse community of students, faculty, and staff focused on innovation and tackling our most challenging infrastructure problems.

Our undergraduate and graduate programs continue to grow in both student number and quality. We just welcomed our largest freshman class of 55 students and now have nearly 200 undergraduates in our program. Our students are winning prestigious awards and are graduating with offers from some of the best firms and graduate schools in the country.

We recently launched a new MS program which allows students to tailor a curriculum to their needs and finish their degree in one year. With some of the lowest tuition rates in the country, our MS program provides unprecedented access to an advanced degree. Our PhD students are engaged in cutting-edge research in all the major areas of civil engineering, including geotechnical, structural, environmental, transportation, and water resources/coastal engineering.

We have also recently developed a number of remarkable research facilities, including an 80-ft long integrated wave and current flume facility and a 76-node, 9.7 TB computing cluster. These new facilities are enabling our faculty to make unprecedented advances in understanding waves and currents and simulating fluid-structure interactions. These insights provide a unique opportunity to dramatically improve the resiliency of coastal communities, increase the harvesting of energy using hydrokinetic devices, and improve the environment. These new facilities complement our existing laboratories in sustainable geotechniques, intelligent transportation systems, logistics systems optimization, transportation planning, environmental biotechnology, and environmental molecular science.

As one of only two comprehensive (Bachelors to PhD) civil engineering programs within the State University of New York, the Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University is well poised to become one of the top civil engineering programs in the country. Go Seawolves!
