Chemical Education

My research interests revolve around the development of materials and methods to support student learning and its assessment. I have served as co-PI and technical director on a number of NSF-DUE grants related to the development and implementation of POGIL (Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) and the web-based LUCID Learning and Assessment System, and served on the Board of Directors of the NSF sponsored POGIL National Dissemination Project. Opportunities for undergraduate research are available as follows.

  • Application of item response theory to the development of procedures and a scale for measuring student learning across general chemistry courses and course instances.
  • Continuing development and application of our multidimensional assessment model for measuring specific student learning outcomes.
  • Development of web-based interactive POGIL activities.
  • Continuing development of LUCID.

Awards

  • Honorary Member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, for outstanding contributions to students, 2001.
