Interim Dean Jon Longtin Hosts Two On-Campus Lectures to Welcome New Students

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences held two on-campus events during opening week (August 16-20, 2021) to welcome first-year CEAS students as Stony Brook students arrived back on campus for the beginning of the 2021/2022 academic year.

On Tuesday, it was standing room only for the first in our “Meet the Dean” lecture series. Recently appointed Interim Dean Jon Longtin addressed students in the New Computer Science lecture hall to discuss Welcome, Classroom Survival Skills, and How to Retire a Multimillionaire. He shared a number of survival skills, strategies and tips to incoming students from CEAS, in addition to Stony Brook’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and College of Business. He also discussed his strategy for how to retire a multimillionaire by starting to save early and aggressively with one’s first job after college. 

On Thursday, we played “Stump the Dean,” a highly interactive session in which students presented mechanical topics for DeanLongtin to explain, to their satisfaction. It was a great discussion focused on how things work - problems engineers solve every day - and how engineering impacts everything we know. Topics requested by the students included flexible glass, automotive brakes, car crash safety, gyroscope/accelerometer, fiber optics and many more.

“It was absolutely wonderful to speak to members of our freshman class, made better still by being able to do this in person,” said Interim Dean Jon Longtin. “It’s incredibly gratifying to welcome everyone back to campus and to see our lecture halls brimming with activity.”

The second lecture in our “Meet the Dean” series will take place during Engineers Week beginning February 20, 2022.
