College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Welcomes New Faculty

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences is pleased to welcome our new faculty joining Stony Brook in the 2021/2022 academic year.

Applied Mathematics and Statistics

Erik Miller

Erik Miller
Lecturer (January 2022)

Erik joins Stony Brook in January 2022 from the University of Georgia’s Department of Mathematics where he has been an instructor since 2013. His teaching interests include undergraduate applied mathematics, statistics, and decision making. He received his MS in Mathematics from Portland State University and a BA in Chemistry and Mathematics at Linfield College. He will be teaching sections of AMS 210 and AMS 301.

Civil Engineering

Marija Krstic

Marija Krstic
Assistant Professor of Practice

Marija was most recently an Instructor at Stony Brook for the 2020-2021 Academic year, and prior to that a Post-Doctoral Researcher with CUNY. Her research interests include advanced concrete materials, high-performance concrete structures, and innovative sustainable materials for building and construction, including experimental testing of concrete from nano-, micro- and macro-levels, up to field application levels. She received her PhD in Civil Engineering and MS in Structural Engineering from City College (CUNY), and a BS in Structural Engineering from University of Nis in Serbia.

Computer Science

Supartha Podder

Supartha Podder
Assistant Professor

Supartha joins Stony Brook from the University of Ottawa where he was a postdoctoral fellow. His research interests include: Quantum computing, Complexity theory, Quantum cryptography, and Analysis of Boolean functions. He received his PhD in computer science from the Centre for Quantum Technologies, National University of Singapore, and his Master (MPRI) in Computer Science from École normale supérieure Paris-Saclay, formerly known as ENS Cachan.

Dominik Kempa

Dominik Kempa
Assistant Professor

Dominik joins us from the Johns Hopkins University Department of Computer Science where he was a postdoctoral fellow. His research interests include: string algorithms, data compression, compressed data structures, bioinformatics, parallel and external-memory algorithms. He received his PhD in Computer Science from University of Helsinki, and his MS in Computer Science and BS from Mathematics from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland.

Mechanical Engineering

Amin Fakhari

Amin Fakhari
Assistant Professor of Practice

Amin has been a researcher in Stony Brook’s Department of Mechanical Engineering since 2019 and before that was an assistant professor for SUNY Korea. His research in robotics, dynamical systems, control systems, and mechatronics aims to develop robotic systems that mimic or surpass human capabilities. He received his PhD and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Isfahan University of Technology in Iran, and a BS in mechanical engineering from University of Kashan in Isfahan, Iran.

Biomedical Informatics

Prateek Prasanna

Prateek Prasanna
Assistant Professor

Prateek joined Stony Brook in Spring 2020 from Case Western Reserve University where he was a Research Associate in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and at Case School of Medicine. His research interests include developing companion diagnostic tools for thoracic-, neuro-, and breast-imaging applications with the overarching goal to bridge the gap between human and machine interpretation of biomedical imaging data via techniques such as radiomics, pathomics, deep learning, and multi-modal data fusion. He received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rutgers University, and B.Tech. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from National Institute of Technology in Calicut, India.

Civil Engineering

Paolo Celli

Paolo Celli
Assistant Professor

Paolo joined us in Spring 2020 from California Institute of Technology where he was a Postdoctoral Scholar in Mechanical and Civil Engineering. His research interests include experimental and computational aspects of solid mechanics, with a focus on nonlinear mechanics, structural dynamics and wave physics with the goal of leveraging mechanics principles and some amount of creativity to design structural systems characterized by unprecedented functionalities, and capable of adapting to the environment around them. He received his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota and his MS in Mechanical Engineering from Politecnico di Torino in Italy. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Università Politecnica delle Marche in Italy.

Georgios Moutsanidis

Georgios Moutsanidis
Assistant Professor

Georgios joined us in Spring 2020 from Brown University where he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of Engineering. His research interests lie in the general area of computational mechanics, engineering, and sciences, and he works on the development of high-fidelity computational methods for the simulation of extreme events, such as Air-Blast-Structure Interaction (ABSI), hypervelocity impact, and fracture. He received his PhD in Structural Engineering and Computational Science from the University of California at San Diego and MS in Civil Engineering from University of Texas at Austin. He received a Diploma in Civil Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece.

Mechanical Engineering

Dimitris Assanis

Dimitris Assanis
Assistant Professor

Dimitris Assanis joined us in Spring 2020 from University of Delaware where he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and the Principal Engineer at Assanis & Associates, Inc., an engineering consulting company. His research expertise includes advanced experimental techniques, such as optical diagnostics for combustion and spray imaging, computational fluid dynamics models aimed at improving fuel-air mixing, and ignition and combustion of alternative low-carbon and carbon neutral fuels in advanced combustion engines. The ultimate goal of his group’s efforts is to improve the efficiency of energy conversion, power generation and propulsion systems. He received his PhD, MS and BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Shanshan Yao

Shanshan Yao (Spring 2020)
Assistant Professor

Shanshan joined Stony Brook in Spring 2020 from North Carolina State University where she was a Postdoctoral Research Scholar. Her research aims to provide new solutions and applications in personal healthcare, fitness tracking, rehabilitation, soft robotics, and entertainment through combined innovations in materials engineering, mechanical design, and multi-scale manufacturing and integration. She received her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. and her ME in Microelectronics and Solid-state Electronics and BE in Microelectronics from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China.
