A Message from Dean Andrew Singer

Dean Andrew Singer

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) at Stony Brook University. I am honored to join you as Dean of one of the most exciting colleges in the world at one of the most important times in history for engineering and applied sciences. With historic investments in the science and technology that will impact everything from the nano to the macro scales, and Stony Brook University setting the standard for inclusive excellence along the way. Although only recently established in 1957, Stony Brook University is the birthplace of some of the most impactful discoveries of the last century, including the MRI, the Macintosh computer, and reduced instruction set computing. Our CEAS alumni, faculty, and staff have had a profound impact on the world as we know it and will continue to improve every aspect of our lives.

We are committed to providing world-class education and research opportunities to our students and have done so in a manner that remains among the most affordable in the nation and consistently ranked #1 for social mobility among highly selective universities. Our vision is to continue to change the lives of our students, while changing the world around us, improving the human condition for everyone.

There has never been a better time to join us at Stony Brook. We have exciting new leadership across campus, with Maurie McInnis joining as President in 2020. Under her leadership, Stony Brook University was named flagship of the SUNY system by Governor Hochul, selected as the anchor Institution for the $700M world-leading climate center on Governors Island, and received an historic $500M gift from the Simons Foundation, the largest unrestricted gift to a public institution in US history. Joined by Provost Carl Lejuez in 2022, they have stressed the importance of CEAS to the future of Stony Brook University. Attracted by this strength in leadership and the tremendous opportunity in CEAS, I recently joined as Dean, with goals of accelerating the upward trajectory of our national profile, continuing to innovate in engineering education, and building a vibrant and inclusive innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

There is nothing we cannot accomplish if we put our minds together, and if you need proof, just look at what our students, faculty, and alumni have accomplished so far. And we are just getting started.
