The Vallone Family Endowed Scholarship

Eric, Lee and Mitchell Vallone, each an alumnus of Stony Brook University’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, together with their father, David Vallone, wish to establish the Vallone Family Endowed Scholarship in memory of their beloved mother and wife, Florence Vallone. Florence was an environmentalist and animal lover, a devoted volunteer for the causes that were closest to her heart and a tireless advocate for “the underdog”. The Scholarship is intended to ease the financial burden of an undergraduate education in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, while also encouraging gender equality in the study of science and engineering fields. Under this scholarship program, one scholarship will be awarded to a student meeting the qualifications below in the amount of $1,000; which may be renewable annually based on continued scholarship eligibility.

To qualify for the Vallone Family Endowed Scholarship, interested students must:

A. Be enrolled as a full time undergraduate student in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences for the full academic year (BOTH the fall and the spring semesters) with a declared major in Computer Science or Computer Engineering

B. Demonstrate financial need based on successful completion of the FAFSA and in consultation with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services. 

C. Freshmen eligible for the award will meet or exceed the admission requirements set by the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences for entry into the Computer Science or Computer Engineering programs.

D. For continuing students, a minimum GPA of 3.2 is required to receive the scholarship award, with preference given to students with a minimum GPA of at least 3.5.

E. Preference will be given to students who attended a New York Public High School. 

F. Preference will be given to students who maintain a course load of 15 credits or more per semester. 

G. Students participating in the New York State’s Excelsior Scholarship are not eligible for tuition support. For students participating in New York State’s Excelsior Scholarship. Non-tuition expenses typically include room and board, insurance, student fees, travel, books and supplies, personal expenses or other common non-tuition expenses as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services. 

H. Special consideration and preference be given to students who demonstrate interest in, experience with or commitment to advancing the interests of gender equality or rights within the fields of science or engineering.   


Interested candidates should submit the following documents:

1. A completed application form

2. A one-page statement describing your interest, experience with or commitment as per section H. Examples of demonstrated  interest or experience may include, but are not limited to: coursework, research activities or participation in university programs such as the WISE program.

Examples of demonstrated commitment may include, but are not limited to a student's involvement in student organizations, such as WiCS or SWE; community activities, social groups, volunteering efforts or other civic engagements that support this focus.

All scholarship awards are subject to renewal of the scholarship by the donor and receipt of funding for these awards.

If selected to receive this scholarship, you will be required to furnish this office with a letter of thanks to the donor of the scholarship. Details will be specified in the scholarship offer letter.
