Diversity, Civility and Expectations

March 26, 2020

Stony Brook is committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive community in which students, faculty, and staff thrive in an atmosphere free from all forms of discrimination. The unprecedented crisis of COVID-19, with its constant flow of conflicting information and rumors, has in some cases increased levels of fear, facilitated mistrust, and created a platform for intolerant behavior, the enemies of civility.

Stony Brook is strongly opposed to discrimination and harassment, and such behavior is prohibited by University policy. It is important that you familiarize yourselves with the policies that effect our daily interactions with others on campus. Please review the University’s Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Policy and Sexual Misconduct and Reporting Policy; see -

Both policies are vital to creating and maintaining a community in which our collective population can live, work, study, and recreate in an atmosphere of tolerance, civility, equity, equal employment opportunity, and respect for every individual. The best way to create and sustain this culture is to be an effective role model.

It is very important to know that Stony Brook is committed to conducting prompt and equitable investigations and will immediately and appropriately address violations of University policy. Upon completion of an investigation, students and employees found to have engaged in acts of harassment or discrimination will be promptly disciplined. Such discipline may include, if circumstances warrant, suspension, expulsion, or termination.

In alignment with Stony Brook’s Strategic Plan for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, there is an expectation of collective ownership of our campus and how we represent it. The responsibility, both on-campus and online, is a shared priority for all. We need to come together unified in the common belief that our similarities and differences enhance our collective and innovative capacity to persevere and thrive.

Far and Beyond, we are Stony Brook Seawolves!
