Faculty can design student reflections in whatever way they find most effective. Below are some writing prompts that encourage productive reflection.
- What has been the most difficult aspect of beginning an internship given your previous life, or work, or internship experiences? How do you plan to overcome your difficulties?
- In what ways do you believe that this internship can help you overcome your weaknesses as a learner and/or as a professional?
- What were your initial reactions during your first weeks as an intern? In what ways have your initial reactions changed over the first weeks of your internship? If your reactions haven’t changed, why do you believe they have stayed the same?
- What particular class do you find yourself thinking about the most during your first weeks as an intern? What is it about this class, its content, or its instructor comes to mind as you work at your internship? If no classes come to mind, what class do you wish you would have taken in the past that would be useful in your current role?
- How/why did you decide on your academic major? In what ways is, or isn’t, your academic major connected to this internship? How might you connect your academic major and your internship experiences in the future?
- How does your site supervisor communicate with his/her/their employees? With you? What do you find effective about their communication styles? What might improve his/her/their abilities to communicate effectively with employees?
- What is one disappointment you have experienced so far in your internship? Is the disappointment personal? Is it the result of the work environment? How did you manage this disappointment? What strategies will you employ to move beyond this perceived disappointment?
- In what ways, specifically, do you believe you have changed since starting this internship? What brought about these changes? Are you pleased or displeased with them? How will you maintain these changes?
- What has been the most challenging task you have been asked to complete during your internship? How did you handle this task? What steps did you take to ensure your success? If faced with a similarly challenging task in the future, what would you do differently?
- How have you adapted the variety of skills you acquired as a student to your internship? What skills have you relied on the most during this internship? What skills do you believe you need to develop further?
- If you could speak to your pre-intern self, what would you say? What do you wish you knew then that you know now? What advice or cautions would you give?
- What do you believe that Stony Brook University can do to improve its internship experiences for students?
