Center for Inclusive Education
The Center for Inclusive Education (CIE) is committed to advancing diversity in graduate education, academia, and the scientific workforce. The CIE works to recruit, retain, and graduate underrepresented minority and otherwise disadvantaged scholars, as well as those scholars who advance the mission of increasing diversity of their respective fields. To ensure the success of our scholars, we provide financial assistance, social support, and advocacy.
The CIE is dedicated to increasing awareness of issues related to diversity at the university level, collaborating with faculty and staff to enhance the diversity of their respective departments, and at the national level, engaging in scholarly research activities and program assessment, with the ultimate goal of contributing to greater body of knowledge related to issues of inclusion and diversity. These efforts have been recognized through several grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the State of New York. With over 500 alumni and 150 current scholars, the CIE remains dedicated to the mission of enhancing diversity and inclusion of the academic world.
The W. Burghardt Turner Fellowship is a Graduate Fellowship Program for eligible underrepresented students whose immediate academic plans include obtaining graduate or professional degrees in a variety of disciplines at Stony Brook University. The fellowship is one of the many programs coordinated by the Center for Inclusive Education at Stony Brook University and is funded by the SUNY Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
The Stony Brook University Initiative for Maximizing Student Development: Maximizing Excellence in Research for Graduate Education (IMSD-MERGE) Program aims to increase the number of underrepresented and disadvantaged students (URM) completing highly productive biological and biomedical science degrees at Stony Brook University, and prepare them for seamless advancement into successful research careers. IMSD-MERGE has an undergraduate track (for students interested in pursuing a PhD degree) and a graduate track (for students in a biological and biomedical doctoral program at Stony Brook). IMSD-MERGE is one of the many programs coordinated by the Center for Inclusive Education at Stony Brook University and is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
AGEP-T is the new National Science Foundation grant committed to increasing diversity in the academy in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). AGEP-T is focused on building strategic alliances of institutions and organizations to develop programs that will increase the success of underrepresented minority students in STEM through graduate education, postdoctoral training, and academic STEM career preparation.
The AGEP-T Program is committed to supporting our scholars by providing funding opportunities for activities related to research excellence and professional development. A call for applications will be issued bi-annually and priority deadlines established. Funding applications received after the deadline will be reviewed and considered on a continual basis, based on the funds availability.
FRAME Fellows are selected from among the nation’s most talented advanced graduate doctoral students and postdoctoral scientists in the STEM fields. They represent the highest levels of accomplishment and are dedicated to achieving academic careers in which they will help to mentor and encourage future scholars.
