Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is my GPA competitive? The admission committee takes into account the GPA but many other factors as well. The GPA is not necessary a good predictor of success for graduate studies. We carefully evaluate applications by looking at prior research experience, resilience and hardship. The only requirement is for the GPA to be at least 3.0.
  2. Should I contact a faculty member prior to my applying to the program? This is not compulsory but it is always better. It shows that you already identified a potential host laboratory.
  3. I already have a M.S. degree in engineering, can I be considered an advanced student and skip the M.S. portion? Yes, in this case you will be responsible for finding a laboratory to fund your research as a Research Assistant prior to applying to the program. You will have to apply to regular M.S. if you cannot find a supported RA position prior to application. See details here.
  4. Where can I find the specific application requirements? Please follow this link.
  5. Do I need the GRE to apply? No, the GRE is no longer required.
  6. I am a foreign student, what are the language requirements? IELTS: overall score of 6.5, with no subsection recommended to be below 6, or TOEFL iBT: overall score of 90 for doctoral applicants and 85 for Master applicants. You will not need an English proficiency test if you attended an English-speaking institution. See graduate bulletin here.
  7. What is the financial support structure for Ph.D. students? Ph.D. students typically start as Teaching Assistant (TA) for the first two semesters and become Research Assistant (RA) at the end of the first academic year. Those positions come with a stipend from the graduate program (TA) and from the faculty mentor (RA). Ph.D. students also receive a full tuition and fees scholarships.
