SEE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Our program is dedicated to the study of China, both as a vital part of the world today and as one of the great civilizations in human history. To this end, we offer courses ranging from language to literature, history, religion, comparative studies, anthropology, philosophy, sociology, and other areas. We seek to foster in our students an appreciation of the rich heritages of China’s past as well as of the complexities of China’s present.

Teacher Education Program for Chinese

Stony Brook University has an undergraduate teacher education program in Chinese leading to New York State initial teaching certification and the B.A. degree in Asian and Asian American Studies: Adolescent Education –Chinese, Grades 7 – 12.

Chinese Studies Award

  • Tina Li is a senior double majoring in Applied Mathematics & Statistics and Business Management, with a minor in China Studies.
  • Xinyuan Weng is a third-year student majoring in Human Evolutionary Biology, with a deep passion for Chinese language, culture, and history.
  • Nancy Zhou joined the study abroad program in Shanghai previously and is currently learning Chinese at an advanced level. 

Leadership Scholarship

  • Maggie Zheng is a Spring 2026 graduate majoring in Asian and Asian American Studies with a minor in China Studies (Chinese Education track), and served as an AAAS Department Intern in Fall 2025.
  • Xuanjun Li is a senior majoring in Information Systems and an active leader in the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA).
  • Yueying Zhang is an AAAS minor with a strong interest in global health, leadership, and community service.

Freshman Award

  • Emily Jia is a freshman with a deep interest in diverse academic and cultural viewpoints, active in CHI classes, the SBU swim team, and research with the EACC VIP team and URECA.
