 Bishembarnath & Sheela Mattoo, Center for India Studies presented a book talk, Lord Siva's Song: The Isvara Gita by  Andrew Nicholson on Monday, February 23, 2015.  

* AAAS faculty led interdepartmental effort in securing a  two year federal grant  to improve language education at SBU.  

*   Dasan Translation Project : In 2014, the Center for Korean Studies received an initial three-year grant for extensive research and creative interpretation on  Old and New Commentaries of the Analect  written by an eighteenth-century Korean scholar Cheong Yakyong. The translation of Cheong's works with extensive contemporary commentaries by Dr. Hongkyung Kim will be published in five volumes within several years. *   Agnes He delivered plenary address at the 2nd International Conference of the  American Pragmatics Association (AMPRA).  She will speak on the  metamorphosis of meaning.

*  October 10, 2014  “The American Empire’s Camera”: Nerissa Balce delivered a lecture on abjection and Philippine colonial photographs, at the Philippine Consulate in New York City.

*  October 9, 2014 Lecture Explores How Certain Traits Shape Our Success! 

*  On October 2, 2014, Nerissa Balce presented a paper on queering Filipino fascism for the conference, "The States of Southeast Asian American Studies" at the University of Minnesota.

*  A new study on the socio-economic issues of Asian Americans was just published by the Center for American Progress, a non-partisan educational institute. *  Peg Christoff has been approved for funding, in the amount of $4,000, for the TALENT Grant.   She will use this funding to introduce interactive materials for her introductory course on the political geography of Asia and Asian America.  Congratulations Peg!

*  Learn Indian Languages in India: AIIS summer 2013 and academic year 2013-2014 language programs. The American Institute of Indian Studies welcomes applications for its summer 2013 and academic year 2013-2014 language programs. Programs to be offered include Hindi (Jaipur), Bengali (Kolkata), Punjabi (Chandigarh), Tamil (Madurai); Marathi (Pune), Urdu (Lucknow), Telugu (Vizag), Malayalam (Thiruvananthapuram) and Sanskrit (Pune) and Pali/Prakrit (Pune). We will offer other Indian languages upon request. All academic year applicants should have the equivalent of two years of prior language study. For regular summer Sanskrit, we require the equivalent of two years of prior study; for summer Bengali, Hindi and Tamil we require the equivalent of one year of prior study. For summer Urdu, we require the equivalent of one year of either Hindi or Urdu. We can offer courses at all levels, including beginning, in other Indian languages for the summer. Summer students should apply for FLAS (graduate students) if available for funding to cover the costs of the program. Funding for Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi and Urdu may be available through the U.S. State Department's CLS program (see www.clscholarship.org). Academic year students are eligible to apply for an AIIS fellowship which would cover all expenses for the program. AIIS is also offering a fall semester program. We offer Hindi and Urdu at all levels for the fall; we require two years of prior language study for other languages for the fall. The application deadline is January 31, 2013. * In summer 2012,   Nerissa Balce  gave lectures on political humor at four universities in the Philippines: Silliman University in Negros Oriental island, De La Salle University-Manila, Ateneo de Manila University, and the University of Santo Tomas. She gave a fifth lecture on American colonial images of the Philippines at Philippine Women's University. Silliman University poster  here.

*  SBU Embarks on  Korean Language Teacher Certification Program with the grant from Korean Education Center, in New York.

*  The China Studies Program of Department of Asian and Asian American Studies is proud to announce the recipients for the 2012 Shi Ming Hu/Eli Seifman Leadership Award and Chinese Studies Scholarship of $500 each---Crystal Lee for the Leadership Award and Eric Ma for the Chinese Studies Scholarship. *  Languages without borders: Models of Multilingualism in Cognitive Science and Sociolinguistics"  Kachru Endowment Distinguished Lecture, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, September 2012.

*  Who is afraid of English? Globalization and Local Identities in Bangalore" (with Kamal K. Sridhar) to be presented at the 18th Conference of the International Association for World Englishes (IAWE) will be jointly hosted by City University of Hong Kong and Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, December 6-9 2012.

*  "Movements for Deconvergence of Dravidian from Indo-Aryan: Sociolinguistics, Language Identity and Development" Plenary Lecture, International Conference on Language Contact, Deccan College, Pune India, and and Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, India, February 2013 .

*  Agnes He will deliver a plenary address at the next Annual Conference of the  American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL), to be held in March 2013 in Texas.

 *  "World Englishes and in the Multilingual World" Plenary Address at the International Association for World Englishes 19, University of Arizona, Phoenix, November 16-18, 2013

Andrew Nicholson's book, Unifying Hinduism: Philosophy and Identity in Indian Intellectual History, has won the 2011 award for Best First Book in the History of Religions from the American Academy of Religion. 

*  Gregory Ruf has been awarded the prestigious Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching for the academic year 2010-11.  

*  SUNY Board of Trustees Appoints  S.N. Sridhar to Distinguished Service Professor.  .

*  We are saddened to inform you that on March 11, 2011, Professor Donny George Youkhanna passed away.  We will miss him dearly.

 Nerissa S. Balce organized a panel entitled, "The Afterlife of Empire and the Cold War: The Cultures of Southeast Asia in American Studies" and read from her research on war, American popular novels and the discourse of counterinsurgency at the annual meeting of the American Studies Association in San Antonio, TX on November 20, 2010.
