bookcoverRita Nezami Translates  The Pleasure Marriage

Rita Nezami, who teaches in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric and is affiliated faculty in the Department of Africana Studies, recently translated  The Pleasure Marriage,  a French novel by Goncourt Prize winner Tahar Ben Jelloun. The story is unrelenting in its denunciation of patriarchal and racist society. It also interrogates injustice, biracial marriage, immigration, and deportation-related violence. Nezami writes in the translator’s preface: “This mélange of poetry and harsh reality, of magic and global crisis, of fiction and nonfiction, gives rise to a story that has all the texture of complex reality.”
