Fernando Gomez-Baquero is the Co-founder and CEO of BESSTECH, an Albany-based startup developing a novel anode for lithium-ion batteries. His research focuses on advanced nanomaterials for energy storage applications and on the economic impact of pervasive nanotechnologies. Fernando has more than 10 years of experience in the nanotechnology industry, starting with production and characterization of carbon nanotubes and later working in the development of polymer/nanotube composite materials. Fernando's has several publications in nanomaterials research and on the economic impact of nanotechnologies. Fernando holds a Ph.D. in Nanoscale Engineering from the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany SUNY.


Bringing semiconductor processing to the battery world: R2R PECVD fabrication of silicon-based anodes for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract: The solution based manufacturing approach used by the lithium ion battery industry since the 1970s has not yielded the necessary leaps in both performance and cost reductions. More efficient semiconductor processing techniques have been successfully applied to the thin-film solid-state battery space, but not to the traditional lithium ion battery formats that comprise the majority of the lithium-based energy storage market. BESSTECH will present how the advent of roll-2- roll (R2R) semiconductor processing can serve both the needs of the traditional lithium ion battery space, as well as the growing solid-state battery space, bringing not only performance improvements but also dramatic cost reductions to the battery world.


BESSTECH is a lithium-ion component design and engineering company, delivering design solutions to battery manufacturers and assemblers. Our first product is a silicon-based nanoengineered anode for lithium ion battery systems. Our anode technology provides 4 times the energy capacity of carbon anodes, charging rates as low as 6 minutes, and a lifetime of over 1000 cycles. Our manufacturing process cuts anode costs more than 50% because it eliminates the use of carbon, binders, solvents, solvent recovery systems, drying systems and calendaring tooling. For our customers who are battery assemblers, this means that they can produce more price competitive batteries that charge faster, have longer times between charging, increased lifetimes, and decreased weight.
