From the Ground Up
High Efficiency Houses
Abstract: Three very energy-efficient homes have been built in Syracuse.
The house designs were selected as part of design competition at the Syracuse University School of Architecture in 2009.
These homes are being extensively monitored to quantify energy use and thermal performance.
The measured results from the first few months of operation confirm that space heating loads are very low on the same order
as the domestic water heating loads on an annual basis. The houses all used combined water heating and space heating systems.
The efficiency of the fuel-fired systems was confirmed to be good in the space heating mode but lower when making domestic hot water.
The technical challenge is to configure efficient and cost-effective heating systems to meet the thermal loads in these low-load homes.
