James W. Bush

BITZER Scroll, Inc.

James W. Bush received his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Tennessee Technological University in 1982 and became a licensed Professional Engineer in 1986. He has worked in air, gas, and refrigerant compressor development for thirty two years. Products include centrifugal, piston, scroll, rolling piston, and screw compressors. He holds 105 U.S. patents in the field of compression technology. As engineering manager he has overseen development and introduction of the Ingersoll-Rand line of air compressors, the Copeland scroll compressor, the Carrier 104 millimeter geared twin screw compressor and the RS105 container refrigeration compressor. In his role as Vice President of BITZER Scroll, Inc. he has overseen the ground-up launch of the BITZER Scroll design center and the introduction of the Orbit 8 series of R-410A large commercial scroll compressors. He is presently supporting the launch of the Orbit 6 second generation medium commercial scroll compressor product family.

Energy Strategies in Large Scroll Compressors

Abstract: BITZER International has recently launched a new design center in Syracuse, NY focused on the design, development, and manufacture of scroll compressors for commercial HVAC applications. The primary market is in chillers and packaged systems for medium to large commercial and public buildings. Evolving energy regulations are emphasizing new approaches to building efficiencies with such concepts as waste heat recovery, geothermal heat pumps, and low-lift designs. Products using such strategies include large heat pumps and variable capacity systems which increasingly look at integrated (or weighted average) system performance. These trends are driving commercial-duty scroll compressors toward 1 ) increased operating range to leverage heat pump benefits over a larger geographic range, 2 ) increased variable speed capability to take advantage of modified rating standards which take into account variable speed drive efficiencies, and 3 ) efficiency characteristics tailored to specific applications and their respective rating standards.
