Dimitris Assanis, PhD
Dr. Dimitris Assanis is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stony
Brook University, an Affiliate of the Institute for Advanced Computational Science,
the Director of the Advanced Combustion and Energy System (ACES) Laboratory and a
Distinguished Associate and “Fuel and Carbon Management” Track Co-Chair of the Internal
Combustion Engine (ICE) Division of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
The ultimate goal of his research group’s efforts is to improve the efficiency and reduce
the emissions of energy conversion, power generation and propulsion systems. With
over 15 years of experience in the field of fuels and combustion, his specific foci
of interest lie within fuel injection systems, fuel-air mixture preparation, ignition
systems, novel energy system architectures, combustion performance and emissions analysis.
Dr. Assanis’ research expertise encompass the development and application of advanced experimental techniques, such as single-cylinder engine in-situ measurements and optical diagnostics for combustion and spray imaging, as well as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, aimed at improving fuel-air mixing, ignition, combustion and emissions of emerging fuels.
