SUSPENSION

Your academic standing is SUSPENSION if your cumulative GPA drops below a 2.0 under the following circumstances:

  1. Students on First Semester Warning who have less than a 2.0 cumulative GPA at the end of their second semester (Fall 2017) AND have less than a 2.0 second semester GPA are Suspended.
  2. Continuing students on Probation who earn less than a 2.0 cumulative GPA at the end of their probation semester (Fall 2017) are Suspended.

If either of these situations applies to you, a Suspension hold has been placed on your record, and you will receive a SOLAR Message/email from the Division of Undergraduate Education.


 

Eligibility Requirements for Petitioning for Conditional Reinstatement 

1. STUDENTS SUSPENDED AT THE END OF THE Fall 2017 SEMESTER

The following groups of students suspended at the end of the Fall 2017 term ARE ELIGIBLE to submit a petition for Spring 2018 reinstatement:

Suspended students who were previously on First Semester Warning who earn a 1.0-1.99 second semester GPA (Fall 2017 term) are eligible to petition for Spring 2018 reinstatement.

Suspended students previously on Probation who earn at least a 2.0 semester GPA (Fall 2017 term) are eligible to petition for Spring 2018 reinstatement.

In order to petition for Spring 2018 reinstatement, please schedule an appointment with the advisor from Academic and Transfer Advising Services, as instructed in your suspension email.  (An advisor will outreach to you via email in early January 2018.)  During the course of your meeting, the advisor will review the petition process with you, address any questions you may have about your academic standing, and offer suggestions to help support your academic success going forward.  

The deadline for petitions for Spring 2018 reinstatement is 5:00 p.m. EST, January 12, 2018.  Please note that submitting a petition does not guarantee reinstatement for the Spring 2018 semester.  For detailed information about the format and documentation needed to request reinstatement, please visit the Petitions and Appeals website here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All students suspended at the end of the Fall 2017 term who do not meet the eligibility requirements described above, may petition for Fall 2018 reinstatement only.)

 

2. STUDENTS SUSPENDED IN PRIOR TERMS

All students suspended in terms prior to Fall 2017, are eligible to petition for Fall 2018 reinstatement.

In order to petition for Fall 2018 reinstatement, please visit Academic and Transfer Advising Services during the Spring 2018 semester (preferably in February or March) to meet with an academic advisor on one of the available dates/times listed on our Google Calendar. During the course of your meeting, the advisor will review the petition process with you, address any questions you may have about your academic standing, and offer suggestions to help support your academic success going forward.  Students may simply walk in to the office and  will be seen on a first-come first-served basis. There is no need to call  to schedule an appointment.  (Please note that walk-in advising is NOT available on the January 2018 Transfer Orientation dates as noted on our Google Calendar.)

Petitions for Fall 2018 reinstatement may be submitted for review beginning April 1, 2018.  The deadline to submit a petition for Fall 2018 reinstatement is 5 p.m. EST on June 15, 2018.

 

IMPORTANT NOTES:   

ALL STUDENTS PETITIONING FOR REINSTATEMENT MUST HAVE A ZERO ($0) BALANCE DUE ON THEIR STONY BROOK ACCOUNTS.

All students Suspended at the end of the Fall 2017 term will be allowed to remain or enroll in Winter Session courses. However, doing so does not guarantee future reinstatement.

Students suspended in Fall 2017 who successfully petition for conditional reinstatement for the Spring 2018 semester, must be registered in their advisor-approved Spring 2018 courses by January 18, 2018.

Suspended students eligible to petition for Spring 2018 reinstatement who do not petition by the January 12, 2018 deadline, or whose petitions are denied, will be deregistered from their Spring 2018 courses and campus housing assignments on January 17, 2018.

Suspended students not eligible to petition for Spring 2018 reinstatement, will be deregistered from their Spring 2018 courses and campus housing assignments on January 8, 2018.
