• What is the Presidential Challenge?
  For the graduating classes in December ‘18 and May ‘19,  Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, and his wife, Ellen Li, MD, PhD,have pledged to personally match the total amount raised by graduating undergraduate seniors.
• Where will the money from the Presidential Challenge go?
  It has yet to be decided, but students will have the opportunity to share ideas with the President ahead of the May Commencement.
• Why should I give?

  To thank Stony Brook for your education, experiences and opportunities.
  Tuition only covers 30% of the cost of a Stony Brook education. The rest is from the private support like gifts from alumni and other members of the Stony Brook community.

  Continue a legacy of generosity and pay it forward.
  More than 50% of students receive scholarships funded in part by alumni support.

  Increase the value of your Stony Brook degree! 
  Gifts from happy students are factored into our U.S.News & World Report ranking.
  Big and small gifts count equally in the U.S.News & World Report’s calculation of alumni giving rates. The higher our giving rate, the higher our ranking.

• What area on campus will benefit from my gift?
  Your gift can be designated to the area of campus that matters to you most. Simply use the search bar on ourgiving formto find a fund that most closely aligns with your interests. Otherwise, SBU will use your gift to address our most pressing needs.
• What is the Stony Brook Fund for Excellence?
  The Stony Brook Fund For Excellence is an unrestricted support fund, which allows the University to support the areas with the greatest and most immediate needs. It ensures our margin of excellence between being a good university and a great university.
• Why am I getting phone calls about this?
  Our student callers at the Telefund have joined our effort in raising the Senior Class Gift. When called, you have the opportunity to make your gift over the phone.
• Why am I being asked for $20.18 and what is a Generosity Cord?
  Because your graduation date is twenty-eighteen. Also, if you make a gift of $20.18 or more, you will receive a Generosity Cord to wear with pride at Commencement. The Generosity Cord is a red, maroon and black colored piece of regalia.

• How do I make my Senior Class Gift?
  You can easily make your giftonline.
• What is the Senior Class Legacy Council?
  The Senior Class Legacy Council is a student group who helps spread the word about the value of philanthropy to their classmates, friends, and others — and gets them excited about giving back, most notably through the Senior Class Gift.
• When is Commencement?
  The December 2018 Commencement Ceremony will take place on  Friday, December 21 at 11 am at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena. For more information, refer to the Commencement website.
