Carol Hernandez, MA

Senior Instructional Designer


Carol has taught and designed both in person and fully online courses for 10 years. From 2014 to 2019 Carol served as an instructional designer at Long Island University. While there, she also taught a fully online graduate course, Introduction to Teaching Online. Carol returned to SBU in August 2019. She is currently teaching research and assessment in the HEA Master’s program and a seminar on global news for Global Studies 102. In her prior career, Carol was a reporter and editor at Newsday before coming to SBU in 2009 to teach in the School of Journalism. Her reporting has also appeared in the Miami Herald, The Wall Street Journal, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and the Dayton Daily News. She was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist for National Reporting at the Dayton Daily News and a Pulitzer winner at Newsday for team coverage in Spot News. She holds a bachelor’s in journalism from the University of Florida and a master’s in higher education administration from SBU. She is currently a doctor of education candidate in organizational leadership at Northeastern University. Her research looks at race, gender, and identity in educational development. Areas of expertise: journalism, writing and editing, designing and teaching online courses, using multimedia in teaching and learning, assessment of student learning, critical race theory in organizational studies.
