The School of Dental Medicine is a community of teachers and learners dedicated to fostering the careers of future dentists and dental educators. We strive to be an international leader and innovator in dental education, patient care, research and service.
Discoveries at the School have fundamentally evolved the practice of dentistry, with faculty and students continually pursuing breakthroughs that resonate at a national and international level. But equally important is our local impact in the community, as we provide essential services and train those who will treat patients beyond the School’s reach. CREATE AND SUPPORT CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE TO ADVANCE CLINICAL CARE, RESEARCH AND EDUCATION
Create and support Centers of Excellence to advance clinical care, research and education
- Center for Implant and Digital Dentistry (clinical and laboratory component)
- Center for the Care of Individuals with Special Needs
- Center for Urgent Dental Care
- Center for Community Wellness (Geriatric and Pediatric), including local outreach programs
EXPAND THE DENTAL RESEARCH PROGRAM
Expand the Dental Research Program
- Seek novel funding opportunities to expand basic, translational, applied and clinical research both within the school and extramurally
- Expand the digital technology research program
- Initiate a current use seed grant program

Student Excellence
- Create scholarships to foster greater enrollment from underrepresented communities as well as retain accepted students
- Develop sustainable and integrated regional, national and global service learning programs

STONY BROOK STORIES
Meeting Healthcare Needs for Underserved Populations
In October 2013, Stony Brook opened a newly renovated and expanded Dental Care Center with a goal of serving more than 15,000 patients annually, many from underserved populations. The Center is the largest provider of oral health care services on Long Island.
