Alex Boeschenstein (b. 1988, Cleveland, OH) is a printmaker, interdisciplinary artist, and educator based in New York, where he serves as an Assistant Professor of Printmaking and Drawing at Stony Brook University.
Alex’s work focuses fundamentally on history—how it haunts the present and how it failed the future. He utilizes the frameworks of weird fiction, gothic Marxism, Cold War parapolitics, and geoscience as tools for gaining fragmentary access to the unthinkable undersides of contemporary society. Each project addresses different yet interrelated concerns, themes, and research avenues—usually informed by regional context—through a balance of archival research, fieldwork, on-site exploration, material salvage, and studio experimentation. The landscapes, ecologies, and mythologies of the American West often serve as protagonists in the paranoic threads he weaves throughout his practice. His interdisciplinary artistic output extends from printmaking into installation, video, sculpture, drawing, photography, and art direction/projected visuals for multimedia dance performances.
Alex received a BA in Interdisciplinary Visual Art at the University of Washington in 2015 and an MFA in Transmedia and Print at the University of Texas in 2022. Recent solo exhibitions include Crosshairs at Ivester Contemporary in Austin, TX; Silent Terminalia at Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art in Buffalo, NY; Mayday Playtime! at Research & Development in Madison, WI; and Visionary Rumor at the Roswell Museum in Roswell, NM. He has exhibited work nationally at the Visual Arts Center in Austin, Texas; R&D Gallery in Madison, WI; and Gallery 4Culture in Seattle, WA, among others. Alex has worked as an educator in formal university settings, including the University of Texas and Austin’s Summer ST.ART program for high school students, and has led demonstrations and workshops at alternative institutions including BICA School in Buffalo, NY, and Common Area Maintenance in Seattle, WA.
