Dr. Shimelis Gulema

Shimelis B. Gulema (PhD, UCLA) is an associate professor of modern African history
and
politics at Stony Brook University, New York. Specializing in modern and contemporary
African
history and politics with a focus on the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region, Dr.
Gulema’s
research focuses on state-society relations, nation-state building, memory and urban
politics,
migration, and the formation of national and transnational identities. He is the author
of
monographs, book chapters, articles, essays, including the books he recently co-edited
The
Horn of Africa and Italy: Colonial, Postcolonial and Transnational Cultural Encounters
(Oxford:
Peter Lang, 2018) and The Global Ethiopian Diaspora: Migrations, Connections, and
Belongings (Rochester University Press, 2024). He is currently working on a book project
with
Oxford University Press, and his latest book, “Urbanizing a Nation, Modernizing a
City: Addis
Ababa 1941-1975,” will be published soon.
