José Manuel Baeza is a PhD candidate in History at Stony Brook University, where he
is a Fulbright Chile scholarship recipient. His advisor is Eric Zolov, a specialist
in 20th-century Latin American cultural history.
José Manuel's research interests include the African Diaspora and race relations in Latin America and the Caribbean, Global Blackness, 20th-century Chilean history, Popular Culture history, and the Global Sixties. His dissertation project, titled A Far-Reaching Diaspora: Routes of Blackness Across Twentieth Century Chile, 1950-1990, delves in the many ways that ideas around African ancestry and Blackness became relevant for Chilean politics and culture, pushing back decades-long narratives of Black disappearance in the country.
He has received several awards, including the IDEA Fellowship from the College of Arts and Sciences at Stony Brook University, part of the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) Fellowship Program.
